David Richards became world rally champion in 1981 from the passenger seat, navigating for Ari Vatanen, and went on to build Prodrive, whose partnership with BMW in British touring cars began in 1987. He had a brief year as chief executive of Benetton in 1998 before Rocco Benetton took over.

His larger Formula One chapter came at British American Racing. When the owners restructured the team after Craig Pollock left, they hired Prodrive to run it with Richards as team principal. Performance improved at once, Jenson Button became the lead driver, and in 2004 the team finished second in the constructors' championship. When Prodrive's management contract ended, Nick Fry took over. Richards later chaired Aston Martin and Motorsport UK. Navigators, it seems, make very good directors.
