Scottish chartered accountant and driver who founded Ecurie Ecosse, double Le Mans winners with Jaguar

David Murray earned his living as a chartered accountant, though his heart belonged to racing. He raced an ERA and then a Maserati 4CLT at home and in Europe, and started five World Championship Grands Prix from May 1950.

In 1952 he formed Ecurie Ecosse, a Scottish team run from Merchiston Mews in Edinburgh, and after one World Championship race for it he stopped driving to run the team. Its finest hours came at Le Mans, which it won in 1956 and again in 1957, both times in a Jaguar D Type. He later moved abroad and died in the Canary Islands, in a road accident, on the 5th of April 1973.
