Daniele Audetto started out writing about sport in Turin, then moved into the passenger seat as a rally navigator for the works Lancia team, reading pace notes for Sandro Munari and Luca di Montezemolo. A serious leg injury at a rally in 1972 steered him into management at Fiat.

In 1976 he succeeded Montezemolo as Ferrari team manager, and once that season closed he was put in charge of all Fiat motorsport. His later career read like a tour of the paddock: Lamborghini's Formula One engine program, Arrows until the team closed in 2002, Renault, and then Super Aguri, where he was managing director until it stopped racing in 2008. He later held the same title at HRT.
