Cyril Abiteboul studied engineering at Grenoble and joined Renault in 2001, where his first task was looking after the Formula One team's website. He moved up through business development to second in command of Renault Sport F1, then joined Caterham and on the 8th of November 2012 succeeded Tony Fernandes as its team principal.

In July 2014 Renault brought him back to run its Formula One team as managing director, and he led the team through its return as a full works entry until it became Alpine in 2021. He also lost a bet with Daniel Ricciardo, who reached the podium at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix and thereby earned his boss a tattoo of a vintage Renault logo. Few contracts have been enforced so permanently. From 2023 he led Hyundai's rally program.
