Italian team manager who built Lancia's rally dynasty and then ran Ferrari, Ligier and Minardi in Formula One

Cesare Fiorio founded HF Squadra Corse in 1963 and turned a company that was not keen on racing into a rally powerhouse: Lancia took the world manufacturers' title in 1974, 1975 and 1976. On weekends off he raced powerboats and won 31 races, which suggests weekends off were rare.

Ferrari hired him as sporting director in 1989, and Nigel Mansell won the first race of the season in Brazil. In 1990 Alain Prost came close to the title, which was settled at the final race in Japan, and Fiorio stayed until the Monaco Grand Prix of 1991. He later managed Ligier, briefly helped Forti, and served Minardi as sporting director before a long run as a television commentator for RAI.
