Andy Cowell read mechanical engineering at Lancaster and joined Cosworth straight from university. By 1998 he was in charge of the upper part of the CK engine that powered Stewart to its 1999 win, and he spent a year at BMW Motorsport working on the 2001 Williams engine before moving to Mercedes Ilmor in 2004.

Aston Martin hired him as group chief executive in July 2024, succeeding Martin Whitmarsh, and in January 2025 he also took over as team principal from Mike Krack. In November 2025 he became chief strategy officer to concentrate on Honda's works engine deal starting in 2026, handing the team principal's role to Adrian Newey. An engine man by training, he has always preferred the part of the car that does the actual work.
