Welsh racing driver who put the AR into March, ran Shadow and cofounded Arrows

Alan Rees was born in Langstone, near Newport, and won three times in 1962 driving Lotus's works Formula Junior cars. Through the mid 1960s he raced in Formula Two for Roy Winkelmann's team, often beating Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt, and made three starts in World Championship Grands Prix.

In 1969 he cofounded March Engineering with Robin Herd, Graham Coaker and Max Mosley; his initials are the AR in the name. Late in 1971 he joined Shadow and became team principal, and in 1977 he left to cofound Arrows, and with the other founders still involved he sold it to Tom Walkinshaw in 1996. He died on the 6th of September 2024, aged 86.
