Aguri Suzuki won the Japanese Formula 3000 title in 1988 and started 88 Grands Prix between 1988 and 1995. His third place at the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix made him the first Asian driver to stand on a Formula One podium. He later finished third at Le Mans in 1998.

Team ownership followed, first with Autobacs Racing Team Aguri in 1997, a regular title contender in Japanese GT racing. Then, with Honda's backing, he announced a Formula One team on the 1st of November 2005 and had it ready in four and a half months. Super Aguri made its debut in Bahrain on the 12th of March 2006 and raced until 2008. Building a Grand Prix team in under five months is the motor racing equivalent of cooking a banquet in a hotel room.
