Russia's First Formula One Driver

Vitaly Petrov became the first Russian to race in Formula One in 2010 and finished third at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix.

Born in Vyborg, Vitaly Petrov started out in rallying rather than karting before moving into Formula Renault. Renault gave him his Formula One debut at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix, making him the first Russian driver to compete in the championship, and he finished fifth in Hungary that season.

His second year with the team opened with third place at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, the only podium of his career, and he added fifth in Canada. He moved to Caterham for 2012, his final season, which ended at the Brazilian Grand Prix after 57 starts. He has since raced sports cars, including for SMP Racing.
