Indianapolis Winner Who Started at Jordan

Takuma Sato raced in Formula One from 2002 to 2008 with Jordan, BAR and Super Aguri before winning the Indianapolis 500 twice.

Born in Shinjuku, Takuma Sato moved to Europe with Honda support and won the British Formula Three Championship in 2001 with Carlin. Jordan gave him his Formula One debut at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, and he moved to BAR as a reserve driver, stepping in at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix to finish sixth.

His full season with BAR in 2004 brought third place at the United States Grand Prix, his only podium. He joined the new Super Aguri team in 2006, and his Formula One career ended when the team withdrew after the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix, his 90th start. He then moved to IndyCar and won the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 and 2020.
