Pastor Maldonado's Barcelona breakthrough

Pastor Maldonado, the 2010 GP2 champion, won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix from pole position for Williams, the first Venezuelan to win in Formula 1.

Pastor Maldonado was born in Maracay, Venezuela, on 9 March 1985. He won a national BMX title as a young child before turning to karting, and he made his first single seater starts in Italian Formula Renault in 2003. A year later he won that championship with eight victories, and he went on through Italian Formula 3000 and the World Series by Renault before reaching GP2.

In 2010 he won the GP2 Series with Rapax, which earned him a Williams seat for 2011. He made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix and scored his first point later that season, his best finish a tenth place.

The 2012 season brought the defining result of his career. At the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona that May he started from pole position and won the race ahead of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari. It was his only podium in Formula 1. He stayed with Williams for 2013 and then moved to Lotus for 2014 and 2015, scoring a best result of seventh with the team.

His Formula 1 record shows 95 starts, 1 win, 1 pole position and 1 podium, all between 2011 and 2015. After leaving the grid he worked as a test driver for Pirelli, then returned to racing in the World Endurance Championship in 2018, finishing third in the LMP2 class with DragonSpeed, and he won his class at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019.
