Narain Karthikeyan

Indian racecar driver

India's Formula One Pioneer

Narain Karthikeyan raced in Formula One for Jordan in 2005 and for HRT in 2011 and 2012, and was India's only Formula One driver until 2010.

Born in Coimbatore, Narain Karthikeyan trained at the Elf Winfield Racing School in France and won races in British Formula 3 and the World Series by Nissan. In 2001 he became the first Indian to drive a Formula One car, in a test for Jaguar, and Jordan gave him his race debut at the 2005 Australian Grand Prix.

His only points came that year with fourth place at the United States Grand Prix, a race in which all but three teams withdrew. He then tested for Williams in 2006 and 2007 and returned with HRT in 2011, racing in the first part of the season and again at his home Indian Grand Prix, before a full year in 2012 that ended in Brazil with his 46th start.
