Lotus Podium in Mexico

Mike Spence raced in Formula One from 1963 to 1968 for Lotus and BRM, finishing third at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix.

Born in Croydon, Mike Spence came through sports cars and Formula Junior and was called up by Lotus for the 1963 Italian Grand Prix, his World Championship debut, alongside Jim Clark. He scored his first points with sixth at Monza in 1964 and fourth in Mexico.

In 1965 he finished fourth in South Africa and Britain and third at the Mexican Grand Prix, his only podium. After a season in a Lotus BRM he joined BRM for 1967, collecting five points finishes. He started the 1968 South African Grand Prix, his 37th start, and in May that year he was killed in a practice accident at Indianapolis while driving for Lotus.
