Monaco's Veteran on the Grid

Louis Chiron, a Grand Prix star between the wars, finished third at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix and remains the oldest driver to start a championship race.

Born in Monaco, Louis Chiron began racing in 1923 and became one of the leading drivers between the two World Wars, winning his home Grand Prix long before the championship existed. When the World Championship began in 1950 he drove for Maserati and finished third at the Monaco Grand Prix.

He raced Maserati and Talbot cars in 1951 and an OSCA in 1953. At the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix he finished sixth for Lancia at the age of 55, making him the oldest driver ever to start a championship race. His final entry came at Monaco in 1958, though he did not start, and his career totaled 15 starts. He died in 1979.
