Ninth at Monaco for Marussia

Jules Bianchi raced for Marussia in 2013 and 2014, scoring his first points at Monaco, and died after an accident at Suzuka.

Born in Nice, Jules Bianchi won the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009, finished third twice in GP2 and was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Marussia signed him for 2013, and he made his Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix.

At the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix he finished ninth after starting twenty first, scoring his first championship points. Later that season, at a very wet Japanese Grand Prix, his 34th start, he crashed into a recovery vehicle and suffered severe head injuries. He died in July 2015. The FIA retired his number 17, and the halo cockpit protection became mandatory in open wheel racing from 2018.
