Youngest Pole Sitter of His Day

Eugenio Castellotti took pole at Spa in 1955 for Lancia and three podiums before his death in testing in 1957.

Born in Lodi, Eugenio Castellotti made his name in sports cars before Lancia gave him his Formula One debut at the 1955 Argentine Grand Prix. He finished second at Monaco and then took pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the time the youngest driver to do so.

He moved to Ferrari later that season and finished third at the Italian Grand Prix. In 1956 he was second at the French Grand Prix, and he won the Mille Miglia and the 12 Hours of Sebring for Ferrari. His last championship race was the 1957 Argentine Grand Prix, his 18th start, and in March 1957 he was killed testing a Ferrari at Modena.
