Privateer from Hesketh to Ensign

Brett Lunger raced in Formula One from 1975 to 1978, mostly in privately run cars, and helped pull Niki Lauda from his burning Ferrari.

Born in Wilmington, Brett Lunger spent most of his Formula One career in privately entered cars. He made his Formula One debut with Hesketh at the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix and drove for Surtees in 1976.

At the 1976 German Grand Prix he was one of the drivers who stopped to help pull Niki Lauda from his burning Ferrari. In 1977 and 1978 he raced privately entered March and McLaren cars, with seventh place at the 1978 Belgian Grand Prix as his best result. A single drive for Ensign at the 1978 United States Grand Prix ended his Formula One career, with 34 starts from 43 entries, and he moved on to sports cars.
