Scuderia Scribante

Johannesburg's Home Grand Prix Regular

Scuderia Scribante brought South African drivers to their home Grand Prix for more than a decade, and once ventured to Europe.

Scuderia Scribante was a South African entrant founded by driver Neville Lederle together with Aldo Scribante, an Italian immigrant who ran a construction business in Johannesburg. Also known as the Neville Lederle Team and later as Lucky Strike Racing, it appeared mainly at the South African Grand Prix, with Lederle finishing sixth there in a Lotus in 1962.

Over the years the team ran Lotus, Brabham and McLaren cars, and Dave Charlton became its regular driver. He won the South African Formula One Championship in 1970, the first of six titles in a row, and in 1972 the team took him to the French, British and German Grands Prix. Its last World Championship appearance was the 1975 South African Grand Prix, the same year Scribante opened a circuit in Port Elizabeth that carried his name.
