Maki and the Missing Start

Japan's first Formula One entrant after Honda's departure, Maki tried across three seasons and never started a World Championship race.

Maki Engineering was a small Tokyo team founded by Kenji Mimura. Its arrival in 1974 was Japan's first Formula One entry since Honda had withdrawn, and its Maki F101 used the Cosworth DFV. Howden Ganley failed to qualify it at the British Grand Prix and was badly hurt at the next race in Germany.

The team returned in 1975 with the updated F101C and sponsorship from Citizen. Hiroshi Fushida could not start in the Netherlands after an engine failure in practice, and Tony Trimmer later took over without making the grid. Maki's only race start came in a non championship event in Switzerland. Its final attempt, with Trimmer at the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, also ended in a failure to qualify, and the team was not seen again.
