Gilby Engineering

British general engineering company

Syd Greene's Family Racing Team

An engineering firm owner turned team owner, Syd Greene ran a Maserati for Roy Salvadori and later built Gilby cars for his son Keith.

Gilby Engineering was a British general engineering company owned by Syd Greene, who had raced in speed trials despite losing an arm as a teenager. He named his racing team after the firm, and it first appeared in the World Championship at the 1954 French Grand Prix with a Maserati for Roy Salvadori, who drove for the team again in 1955 and 1956. Ivor Bueb also raced the Maserati, and Greene's son Keith drove a Cooper.

Greene then built cars of his own for Keith, designed with help from Len Terry. A Climax powered Gilby took the start at the 1961 British Grand Prix, and a BRM powered version raced in Germany in 1962. The team's last entry was the 1962 Italian Grand Prix, after which a privateer bought the final car. Keith Greene later became a well known team manager.
