Camoradi, America's Industry Backed Team

Lucky Casner's Camoradi team took American sponsorship to Europe, winning with Maserati sports cars and dabbling in Formula One.

Casner Motor Racing Division, better known as Camoradi, was founded by Lloyd Casner, known as Lucky, with the help of motoring writer and driver Fred Gamble. Inspired by Ecurie Ecosse, Gamble pitched it as an American national team that could take on the Europeans. It became the first American racing team backed by industry sponsors and was best known for its Maserati Birdcage sports cars, which won the Nürburgring 1000 kilometers in 1960 and 1961.

In Formula One the team ran a Porsche and Coopers, with Ian Burgess and Gamble among its drivers. Camoradi USA ended about 18 months after it was incorporated, through mismanagement and lost sponsorship, and Casner carried on in Europe as Camoradi International. He was killed in a practice accident at Le Mans in 1965.
