The 1984 season

Half a Point Between Teammates

McLaren won twelve of sixteen races, and its two drivers, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost, were separated at the end by the smallest margin the championship has known.

In 1984 McLaren was so dominant that the only real contest took place inside its own garage. The MP4/2, designed by John Barnard and powered by a TAG Porsche turbo that coped well with the new fuel limits, won twelve of the sixteen rounds between Rio de Janeiro in March and Estoril in October. Alain Prost, newly arrived from Renault, won the opener in Brazil. Niki Lauda answered at Kyalami, where Prost recovered from a pit lane start to finish second.
