The 1966 season

Brabham Wins in a Brabham

In the first year of 3 liter engines, Jack Brabham won four races in a row and took the title in a car bearing his own name.

The 1966 rules doubled the size of the engines, from 1.5 to 3 liters, a change promoted as the return to power, and the first team to find that power was not one of the usual suspects. Coventry Climax had stopped building racing engines, so the British teams went looking for new suppliers. Jack Brabham found his in Repco, an Australian engineering firm whose V8 was ready from the start. Lotus began the year with a stopgap 2 liter Climax, and Bruce McLaren and Dan Gurney each set up teams of their own.
