Three drivers reached the final round with a chance at the title, and John Surtees took it by a single point on the last lap.

No championship before 1964 had reached its final round with three drivers and three manufacturers all still in the hunt. Graham Hill of BRM, Jim Clark of Lotus and John Surtees of Ferrari passed the lead among themselves all year, and reliability, more often than speed, decided who held it.
