The 1959 season

Brabham Pushes Cooper to the Title

Rear engined Coopers took control of Formula One, and Jack Brabham clinched the title at Sebring, in the inaugural United States Grand Prix, by pushing his car home.

The 1959 grid began the year without a single world champion on it. Juan Manuel Fangio had retired, and Mike Hawthorn had retired and then died in a road accident. Vanwall had all but withdrawn, so Stirling Moss drove a Cooper for Rob Walker, and Tony Brooks went to Ferrari. Argentina, Belgium and Morocco lost their rounds, and the championship waited until May to begin, at Monaco.
