The 1958 season

Hawthorn by a Single Point

Mike Hawthorn became the first British world champion by one point over Stirling Moss, in a year of British breakthroughs and heavy losses.

Britain took hold of Grand Prix racing in 1958, and the first sign came from a small private car with its engine behind the driver. The year also brought compulsory commercial fuel and a new prize, the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers. The opening two rounds went to rear engined Coopers entered by Rob Walker. In Argentina Stirling Moss gambled on going the whole distance without a tire change and won, the first championship victory for a rear engined car, and Maurice Trintignant took Monaco.
