The 1957 season

Fangio's Fifth and Vanwall's Arrival

Juan Manuel Fangio won a fifth title with Maserati, while Stirling Moss and Vanwall won the first championship race for a British constructor.

Juan Manuel Fangio kept up his habit of changing teams and returned to Maserati for 1957, while Stirling Moss left Maserati for Vanwall after the opening race. The Suez Crisis took the Belgian, Dutch and Spanish rounds off the calendar, and the long road circuit at Pescara was added in their place. Away from the championship, Ferrari lost two drivers. Eugenio Castellotti was killed testing at Modena in March, and in May Alfonso de Portago died in the Mille Miglia, in an accident that also killed his codriver and nine spectators.
