The 1954 season

Fangio Wins for Two Teams

New 2.5 liter rules drew Mercedes back to Grand Prix racing, and Juan Manuel Fangio took his second title driving for Maserati and then Mercedes.

The 2.5 liter formula that replaced Formula Two in 1954 found several teams still at the drawing board. Lancia had lured Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi away from Ferrari, but its D50 would not be ready until the final race, which left its star signings with a long wait. Mercedes was running late too, so it lent its own new driver, Juan Manuel Fangio, back to Maserati for the opening rounds.
