The 1952 season

Ascari and the Formula Two Years

With Alfa Romeo gone and the championship run for Formula Two cars, Alberto Ascari and Ferrari won almost every race that mattered.

Alfa Romeo could not afford a new car and withdrew after 1951, and organizers, fearing thin grids, chose a practical cure: every championship round except Indianapolis would be run for Formula Two cars, with engines of 2.0 liters unsupercharged or 750 cc supercharged. Smaller rules made room for newer constructors such as Cooper, Connaught and Frazer Nash. Racing helmets became compulsory the same year, a rule that seems obvious only in hindsight.
