The 1950 season

Three Alfas and the First Crown

The first World Championship of Drivers was a private contest among three Alfa Romeo teammates, and it stayed open until the final afternoon at Monza.

For its first season, the World Championship of Drivers belonged to a car that was already twelve years old. Alfa Romeo's supercharged 158 had first raced in 1938, and in 1950 it won every championship race the team entered. The calendar ran to seven rounds between May and September: six Grands Prix in Europe and the Indianapolis 500, which followed American rules and drew none of the regular Grand Prix drivers, making it part of the championship more on paper than on the grid.
