Trevor Carlin started as a schoolboy gofer at his uncles' Formula Ford company in Hertfordshire, became a mechanic, and then worked for Ralt in Britain and America. As team manager of Bowman Racing he took David Brabham to the 1989 British Formula 3 title and to victory in Macau.

In 1996 he cofounded Carlin Motorsport, which became the leading force in British Formula 3. Over the winter of 2004 and 2005, Colin Kolles, Jordan's new managing director, appointed him team principal of the Formula One team, a post he left midway through 2005. His junior team went on to win titles with drivers such as Lando Norris, whose British F4 crown came in a Carlin car. For many future stars, the road to Formula One ran through his garage.
