Ted Toleman built a car transport business in Essex before taking his name into motor racing. Toleman Racing succeeded in the junior categories and reached Formula One in the early 1980s, staying for five seasons and scoring 26 championship points.

Its finest hour came in the rain at Monaco in 1984, when a rookie called Ayrton Senna drove the Toleman to second place, the team's best result. Senna added podiums in Britain and Portugal that year, and Teo Fabi took pole at the 1985 German Grand Prix. The team was sold in 1986 and continued as Benetton, while engineers such as Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds carried their Toleman education to championship teams. He died on the 10th of April 2024, aged 86.
