As a boy in Imola, Stefano Domenicali spent weekends at the local circuit helping out in the paddock and the media center. It proved a sound apprenticeship. He joined Ferrari's finance department straight out of the University of Bologna in 1991, became team manager in December 1996 and sporting director in 2002.

Named to succeed Jean Todt in November 2007, he led the team to the 2008 constructors' championship in his first season in charge. In 2012 Fernando Alonso came agonizingly close to the drivers' title, and Ferrari finished second in both standings. Domenicali stepped down in April 2014, ran Lamborghini from 2016, and in 2021 became chief executive of the Formula One Group itself.
