Production engineer who led Williams as team principal through its change of ownership in 2020 and 2021

Simon Roberts built engines, cars and trains before he ran a racing team. A mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Manchester, he worked at Perkins Engines and at Rover, then went to Alstom to oversee the Pendolino tilting train project. McLaren hired him as general manager in 2003, and apart from a season as chief operating officer at Force India in 2009 he stayed there until 2020.

In June 2020 Williams appointed him managing director, and after Claire Williams left he became interim team principal, a post made permanent that December. In June 2021 the team announced that chief executive Jost Capito would take over. Few principals can say they have engineered something that leans into corners on purpose.
