Ross Brawn trained as an instrument mechanic at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell and started in racing in 1976 as a milling machine operator at March. Williams hired him as a machinist in 1978. As technical director of Benetton and then Ferrari, he became known as the strategist behind all seven of Michael Schumacher's titles.

After a sabbatical he became Honda's team principal for 2008. When Honda withdrew, Brawn took over the team in early 2009, and Brawn GP won both championships in its only season, which is one way to keep a perfect record. Mercedes bought in that November, and Brawn stayed on as team principal until stepping down at the end of 2013. From 2017 to 2022 he was managing director of motor sports for the Formula One Group.
