British mechanic turned team owner who ran McLaren from 1981 to 2009, winning seven constructors' championships

Ron Dennis started on the spanners. Raised in Woking, he joined the Cooper team as a mechanic at 18 in 1966, followed Jochen Rindt to Brabham, then struck out with his own junior teams, Rondel Racing and later Project Four, which won Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships.

In 1980 Project Four took over the management of a fading McLaren, effectively a reverse takeover, and Dennis ran the Formula One team from 1981 to 2009. His first move was to commission a carbon fiber chassis. Seven constructors' titles followed between 1984 and 1998, along with drivers' crowns for Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton. He also founded the road car company now called McLaren Automotive. Not bad for a former mechanic from Surrey.
