At 18 Robin Herd declined an offer to play county cricket for Worcestershire and went to Oxford, where he switched from mathematics and graduated with first class honors in both physics and engineering. In 1961 he joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment to work on the aerodynamics of Concorde, and by 24 he was a senior scientific officer.

His school friend Alan Rees tipped him off about a vacancy at McLaren in 1965, and there he drew McLaren's M4B, M5A and M7 Grand Prix cars and the M6A CanAm car. In 1969 he cofounded March Engineering; the H in the name is his. He was appointed CBE in 1986 as managing director of March. Few racing car designers can say they started on a supersonic airliner and found racing more interesting. He died in 2019, aged 80.
