Scottish whisky heir whose Rob Walker Racing Team became the most successful privateer in Formula One history

Rob Walker, an heir to the Johnnie Walker whisky fortune, founded his team in 1953 at the age of 35, and it won eight British club races in its first season. He entered his cars in Scottish colors, blue with a white stripe, rather than the usual British racing green.

In 1958 he concentrated on the big international races, and Stirling Moss and Maurice Trintignant won in Argentina and Monaco, the first victories for a Cooper chassis. Two years later Moss won at Monaco again in Walker's Lotus, the first Formula One win for that make. Walker's team remains the most successful privateer in the sport's history, one of only two entrants to win a World Championship Grand Prix without ever building its own car. Buying the right car and the right driver turned out to be a recipe of its own.
