Motor sport ran in Patrick Head's family, since his father raced Jaguar sports cars in the 1950s. He tried the Royal Navy, decided against it, took a mechanical engineering degree at University College London in 1970 and joined Lola. At one point he left racing altogether to build boats, until Frank Williams lured him back.

On the 8th of February 1977 the two founded Williams Grand Prix Engineering, Williams holding seventy percent and Head thirty. His FW06 arrived in 1978, his cars won from 1979, and his 1980 design took both titles. In 1986, with Frank Williams badly hurt in a road crash, Head shared the running of the team, which won the constructors' title that year and both crowns in 1987. He handed design leadership to Sam Michael in 2004.
