Norbert Haug began as a volunteer on his hometown newspaper in Pforzheim and became deputy editor of Auto Motor und Sport in 1988. He raced as well, finishing second in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 1985, which is more than most motoring editors can claim.

Mercedes hired him in 1990 to revive its motorsport. Under his direction the company came back to Formula One after an absence of almost four decades, first with Sauber from 1993 and then in partnership with McLaren from 1995. When Daimler bought into Brawn GP in 2009, the team was rebranded Mercedes GP for 2010 under his leadership, with Ross Brawn as team principal. He stepped down at the close of 2012.
