Niki Lauda borrowed £30,000 from a bank to buy his way into European Formula Two with March in 1971, and repaid the faith with three world titles, the only driver to win them with both Ferrari and McLaren. Between and after his racing careers he founded and ran three airlines, Lauda Air among them.

His management career began in 1993 as a consultant to Ferrari at Luca di Montezemolo's invitation. Halfway through 2001 he became team principal of Ford's Jaguar team, a role that ended at the close of 2002. In September 2012 he became chairman of Mercedes in a non executive role, helped bring Lewis Hamilton to it, and stayed until his death on the 20th of May 2019, by which time Mercedes had won six consecutive constructors' championships.
