Nick Fry joined Ford as a graduate trainee in 1977 and spent years in product development, working on fast Fords such as the Escort Cosworth and the RS200, and overseeing the launch of the Aston Martin DB7. At Prodrive from 2001 he helped steer Subaru's world rally team to Richard Burns's title.

Early in 2002 he became managing director of BAR, which finished second in the 2004 constructors' championship, and he later succeeded David Richards as team principal. Under Honda ownership he invested heavily at Brackley and attracted Ross Brawn. When Honda withdrew in late 2008, Fry and Brawn took ownership of the team themselves. Brawn GP won eight races and both titles in 2009, with Jenson Button champion. He stayed as Mercedes took over and left in 2013. Rarely has a rescue turned so quickly into a coronation.
