Max Mosley read physics at Christ Church, Oxford, then turned to law, qualifying as a barrister in 1964 and teaching evening classes in law to fund his racing. After two big accidents in 1969 he concluded that he would never be world champion and helped found March Engineering instead. The M in March is his.

He handled March's legal and commercial affairs from 1969 to 1977, and for its first Grand Prix in 1970 there were five March cars on the grid. Jackie Stewart won the Spanish Grand Prix in a customer March that year, and March finished third among the constructors. Mosley then became the teams' advocate alongside Bernie Ecclestone in the constructors' association, and went on to serve as president of the FIA from 1993 to 2009. He died on the 23rd of May 2021.
