British engineer and executive who spent 25 years at McLaren and was its team principal from 2009

Martin Whitmarsh came to motor racing from British Aerospace, joining McLaren as operations director in 1989. He climbed steadily: managing director in 1997, then in 2004 chief operating officer of the group and chief executive of the racing team.

On the 1st of March 2009 he succeeded Ron Dennis as team principal, and he also led the Formula One Teams Association, the body through which the teams spoke with one voice, or at least tried to. He left his chief executive posts in January 2014 and parted from McLaren that August after 25 years. Later chapters included Ben Ainslie's America's Cup challenge for Britain and a spell as group chief executive of Aston Martin's Formula One operation. Aerospace, sailing and racing: a man drawn to anything that moves quickly through air.
