German engineer and BMW Motorsport director who led BMW Sauber from its creation until 2009

Mario Theissen was born in Monschau, studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen and joined BMW's engine calculation department in 1977. He earned a doctorate in engineering in 1989, ran advanced drivetrain development, and in 1998 set up BMW's technology office in Palo Alto.

In April 1999 he and Gerhard Berger took joint charge of BMW Motorsport, overseeing the Williams engine partnership. When that relationship cooled, BMW bought Sauber in 2005, and Theissen became team principal. BMW Sauber finished fifth in its first season and second in 2007, and at Montreal in 2008 Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld finished first and second for the team. The team was sold back to Peter Sauber after 2009. Engineers like a tidy result, and Montreal provided one.
