Marco Piccinini studied architecture in Rome and helped a Formula 3 constructor before his family settled in Monaco, where he co founded the principality's first racing car maker in 1974. Three years later Enzo Ferrari made him his representative on Formula One matters and soon his sporting director.

From 1978 to 1988 he was Ferrari's motorsport director and team principal, and he helped draft the Concorde Agreement, the charter that governs the sport's rules and its money. Negotiation clearly suited him. He later carried those skills into public office in Monaco, serving as minister of finance and economy and then as ambassador for international financial negotiations.
