Marco Mattiacci came to the pit wall from the showroom. Born in Rome, he studied economics at La Sapienza, worked a decade in marketing at Jaguar in Britain, and joined Ferrari in 1999 as an area sales manager. He went on to run Ferrari Asia Pacific and then Ferrari North America, where sales in his markets nearly doubled.

In 2014 he succeeded Stefano Domenicali at the head of the Scuderia, as both its managing director and its team principal. His stay was brief: by November Ferrari had named Maurizio Arrivabene in his place, and Mattiacci's next chapter took him into the electric car business with Faraday Future. Few people can claim to have sold Ferraris on two continents and run the race team in the same career.
