Luca di Montezemolo had a law degree from La Sapienza in Rome when Enzo Ferrari invited him to become his assistant in 1973. The Bologna native had already raced a little Fiat 500 with a friend and driven briefly for a Lancia rally team, so he knew the view from the cockpit as well as the boardroom.

In 1974 he became sporting director of the Scuderia, and during his time with the team Niki Lauda won the World Championship in 1975 and again in 1977. He returned in November 1991 as president of Ferrari, asked to revive a company still finding its feet after its founder's death, and promptly called Lauda back as a consultant. Some partnerships are worth renewing.
