British hotel manager turned chairman of BRM, and an early champion of better medical care at Grand Prix circuits

Louis Stanley studied theology at Cambridge, wrote for Queen magazine and managed the Dorchester Hotel in London before a visit to the 1959 Monaco Grand Prix drew him into racing. His brother in law Alfred Owen, who owned BRM, stayed away from Sunday racing on religious grounds, so Stanley and his wife represented him.

Following the Dutch Grand Prix of 1960 he reorganized the team, and his promotion of Tony Rudd preceded BRM's 1962 double with Graham Hill. When the Owen organization withdrew its support, he ran the team as Stanley BRM. His lasting legacy was safety: in 1967 he founded the International Grand Prix Medical Service and paid for a mobile medical unit himself. He died on the 8th of January 2004, aged 92.
