Alexander Fermor Hesketh became the 3rd Baron Hesketh at the age of four. Educated at Ampleforth, he spent time with Dean Witter in San Francisco, then came home to look after the family's affairs, and a love of motor racing led him to found Hesketh Racing in 1972.

Between 1973 and 1978 the team raced in Formula One, with a flamboyant and patriotic style and a refusal to carry sponsorship that set it apart. With James Hunt it had real success, taking victory in the Dutch Grand Prix of 1975. Hesketh later served as a government minister, headed the British Racing Drivers' Club between 1993 and 2000 and built the Hesketh V1000 motorcycle. Running a racing team without sponsors is an aristocratic gesture in the purest sense.
